Why Are Wind Ratings Important When it Comes to Roofing Materials?

Imitation Thatch

Many business owners overlook the importance of the wind rating on their roofing materials. If your business is located in a place susceptible to high winds, then you should know the rating on your roof. A wind rating tells you how much force your shingles or other roofing materials can withstand.

Additionally, shingles receive a wind rating with a corresponding letter. According to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, here are the corresponding letters that match wind speeds:

• Class D- Up to and including 90 mph
• Class G- Up to and including 120 mph
• Class H- Up to and including 150 mph

Although wind ratings are crucial to the protection of your roof from high winds, proper installation is more important. Properly installed  roofing includes the correct placement of nails based on the manufacturer’s recommendations for the type of roof you’re using and their wind rating. (For most of the U.S., the wind zone designation is 90 mph.)
