Ek Balam Mayan acropolis protected by Endureed Weathered Palm synthetic thatch roofing
Few projects test a roofing product against a thousand years of context quite like a Mayan acropolis. At Ek Balam, Endureed’s Performance Palm in Weathered Palm was specified to protect the exposed stonework, carved friezes, and stucco reliefs atop El Torre and the surrounding structures, standing in for the traditional palm coverings used to shield archaeological sites from tropical sun and seasonal rain. The muted, sun-faded gray tone was chosen deliberately, so the roofline defers to the limestone beneath it rather than competing for attention.
A conservation site cannot afford roofing that fades unevenly, rots in the humidity, or requires scaffolding and disruption every few years to replace. Weathered Palm holds its color and structural integrity through the Yucatán’s heat, humidity, and hurricane season alike, giving conservators a maintenance-free covering over some of the region’s most significant surviving Mayan architecture.
