Natural ThatchA new report from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) suggests that a pesticide once used on natural thatched roofs might jeopardize salmon survival. The information is included in a biological opinion that NOAA’s fisheries experts wrote.
The report was for U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It says that three pesticides, including malathion, could harm endangered salmon.
WHO Suggested Malathion for Thatched Roofs
Decades ago, the World Health Organization suggested malathion for natural thatched roofs in Malaysia. See, on rural houses in Malaysia, natural thatch was the most common roofing material. Since caterpillars ate these natural thatched roofs, people sprayed DDT on them.
Yet, DDT just wrecked the natural roofs faster.
So, the World Health Organization suggested malathion in 1978 instead. This chemical quickly killed caterpillars and didn’t ruin the thatch. Unfortunately, the pesticide is now on the short list of pesticides that might further jeopardize the already endangered Salmon population!
