palm leaf

Humankind has a long history with the palm leaf. Palms were revered across cultures for all of history, because of their versatility. Palm was used for writing on, as a early form of paper. Greeks placed palm leaves on the best Olympic athletes, and to this day, it’s involved in religious ceremonies around the globe. People have always loved the palm leaf.

In building, one of the most widely seen uses, has always been for thatching. Leaves of practically all palms can be used for thatch. When using natural thatch leaves, people would choose young flexible leaves, transport them to the site of the structure and then attach them individually in an overlapping pattern. These roofs worked perfectly through human history, because they were water tight, but allowed smoke out from indoor hearths. These roofs could last up to a couple of years before needing to be replaced.

The look is gorgeous, and it’s one our designers recreated beautifully with our Dominica shingle from our Regions series. (Except ours are flame resistant, pest resistant and last decades!) Check out our synthetic palm thatch roof product on our website.
