It’s considered a very hearty strain of blue-green algae known as gloeocapsa magma. It actually feeds on the limestone in these shingles! It just travels through the air, lands on roof tops, and eats the limestone in the shingles. It’s because today’s typical shingles contain a lot of crushed limestone. The limestone is in the granules that provide UV protection for the shingle.
