Kona synthetic thatch works well with eave wadd, island eaves or built-up eaves. Kona, part of our Regions’ Series, has the appearance of Hawaiian Pili Grass and Asian Alang-Alang grass thatching. You can install it on the following roof types: Valley, Shed, Hip, Gable, Cone, or Compound curve.
You can install Kona synthetic thatch on any sloped roof that has a 2/12 (2:12) or greater roof pitch. So, for every 12 horizontal feet, the roof must drop at least two feet. Some buildings have very little pitch and do little more than drain water. It was considered very fashionable in the 1960’s to have roofs with very low pitches, but if your roof is below this ratio, you might be forced to install a different type of roofing product. Keep in mind, 2/12 is a low-pitched roof. For example, many roofers wouldn’t install traditional shingles on roofs with a pitch less than 4/12. So, Kona can be used on most roofs.
KONA ROOF EAVE TYPES AND INSTALLATION
The eave installation styles make this product very natural-looking. An eave wadd looks especially authentic with this product. Kona is made of both wide leaf and small grass reed. It looks textured, thick, and tropical.
Anyway, this product works best when installed over a substrate material. For the record, we suggest SOPREMA waterproofing membrane. Don’t forget to install eave drip edge flashing below the underlayment. Drip flashing is used on the overhang at the edge of the roof. They protect the facade, support the shingles, and create a roof drip edge. The self-adhering sheet underlayment installed should be installed wrinkle-free when put on the roof deck. Check the weather and be sure to comply with low-temperature installation restrictions when installing the underlayment.
For a great look, first, install the eave wadd block. We especially think the eave block installation looks amazing. Be sure to follow spacing and layout instructions for this look. Here’s a great video demonstrating the eave wadd installation process.
